I am a Devon-based artist living and working in Exeter. My work ranges from city or landscape to abstract but often strays back into narrative territory. As a book illustrator for many years 'story' and 'content' is home ground for me, so it‘s maybe not surprising that my painting returns there.
The joy for me in image-making is playing with perspective, ambiguity and especially layers. I paint mainly in oils and but often use newsprint, almost like underpainting, to create texture. More importantly for me, the text, either relevant, or random and bizarre, peeps through the paintwork and suggests that the surface only tells one story.
