Ulrika Muñoz-Alarcón

I am originally from Sweden, working primarily in ceramics. My ceramic pieces often incorporate mixed media and graphics/ceramic transfers, and I experiment a lot with alternative methods of firing, such as raku, smoke firing, and different types of saggar firings. The work is almost exclusively hand built, usually pinched, coiled, slabbed or created by slumping or draping clay around/in a plaster form. I put a lot of emphasis on texture and how tactile an object is; even if you are not supposed to, or able to touch it, the object you see should invite touch, it should ignite curiosity and thought. A lot of my work centres around the theme of relationships and interaction, it can be between something very physical such as different textures, colours, materials or more conceptual ideas of balancing ideals or thoughts against each other. I’m also very interested in the relationship between the firing and that which is fired. I have been utilising the method of using paper saggars for firings for several years and the symbiotic relationship between the saggar and the vessel within is something I continue to work with and explore.
