Jenny Southam
I have been working with clay for nearly twenty years. Previous to that I sculpted in the medium of bronze. I currently work in terracotta, low-fired, and decorated with slips and oxides. The sculptures explore mythical and domestic themes. They are informed by the patterns and rituals that we construct to keep our world sane and smooth; for example by making beds, feeding the birds and the seasonal cycle of planting seeds. The figures are celebratory, and are enraptured by their immediate and intimate connection to each other and to the natural world, although in a quiet and contemplative way. The decorative slips and oxides are used in an intuitive manner to echo its emotional rhythm. Each sculpture is a one-off although I will return to rework certain subjects and themes.
