Sarah Scott

Sarah Scott Jewellery

My jewellery making is influenced by earlier practice with textile and paper. Using mainly silver, I explore the qualities of metal, soft/hardness, angularity, malleability, and how it can be linked and made fluid, combining fine and thicker sections, and manipulating wire in textile construction techniques.

Wirework is my main activity, largely because it relates to thread, and the texture of the work is also important. I hammer, forge, and burnish to give a patina to the surface of the metal, which ages the piece and gives contrast.

Sources of inspiration for my work are wide-ranging – natural and abstract shapes, geological forms, the complexity of woven structure and ancient treasure hoards all play their part. I have great respect for the skill of ancient silver and goldsmiths, and use simple techniques to create intricate detail and shape.

The work is often finely wrought, light to wear and the range covers chains and bracelets, necklaces, brooches and earrings. I am a member of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen and sell in London, Brighton, Bristol and the South West.
